1915年，青年徐悲鸿在上海求职，陷于绝境。偶然得到康有为的赏识，收为入室弟子并与蒋碧微相爱，私奔日本。后得北大校长蔡元培青睐，被聘为北大画法研究会导师。1919年，考入巴黎高等美术学校，受教于著名画家达仰研修西画，并参加了全法美展，其九幅作品入选，轰动巴黎艺坛。学成回国后，徐悲鸿与左派作家田汉创建南国艺术学院，致力于艺术革新，创作了《田横五百士》巨作。后出任北平艺术学院院长，因提议齐白石任教授遭反对后，又返回南京中央大学培养艺术新军，赴新加坡举办中国绘画展，画款全部寄捐国内抗日遗孤。抗战胜利后，徐出任北平艺专校长，保护进步活动师生，与张道藩操纵的保守势力展开斗争。国共决战，徐悲鸿拒绝威胁利诱，向傅作义陈说利害主张和平解决北平问题，保护古都的文化和百姓。解放前夕，田汉潜回北平向徐悲鸿传达毛主席、周恩来同志的问候。徐悲鸿说服齐白石等文化名人留在北平，迎接解放。
