电视剧《朱德元帅》首次披露了朱德元帅一生与肖菊芳、陈玉珍、伍若兰、康克清的情感经历。剧中朱德与这四位女性的感情经历，让人看到了为中国革命作出杰出贡献的开国元勋朱德元帅戎马倥偬、一心报国的光辉一生，从而产生由衷的敬仰之情。故事从清朝末年朱德报考云南讲武堂起笔，参加“重九”起义后，跟随蔡锷将军参加云南剿匪，护国讨袁，在棉花坡与北洋军一战中，展现了他卓越的军事才能和指挥才能，使之成为赫赫有名的战神、护国名将。但是，随着师长、好友蔡锷将军的去世，中国陷入军阀混战，朱德的战友吴敬和、大贵等人在混战中牺牲，他的两个弟弟也在战争中失踪，而他的妻子肖菊芳也在一场恶病中死去，使朱德陷入人生的谷底。“五四”运动爆发后，朱德结识了新文化运动的名人孙炳文，从他那里了解到中国共产党的诞生和世界共产主义运动，使朱德认识到，只有共产主义才能救中国。于是，朱德与孙炳文走出国门，到共产主义的发源地——欧洲，寻找救国救民的真理。通过周恩来等人的介绍，朱德加入了中国共产党。从此，完成了一个旧军官到无产阶级革命家的伟大转变。
