改编自大仓崇裕的小说《死神刑事》。故事讲述主角?仪藤坚忍（田中圭）在警视厅内某个神秘部门工作，主要是对确定无罪的案件再次展开搜查，因为他查的都是警察组织暗地压下的案件，从中找出新的证据来找出真正犯人，故此和他拍档的人必定会被警察组织针对，永远无法升职，故此他也被称为「死神」。剧集的原创角色?南川芽衣（前田敦子），职位是警视厅公关课所属的巡查长，她一直希望和仪藤（田中圭）拍档，但一直被拒绝。不过她仍然希望能帮到他，从杂务到后方支援，在整个故事中当其影子拍档，也是故事的「说书人」角色。原作小说有4个故事，这次的日剧版将以1话完结的模式进行拍摄。小手伸也演初代的相棒?大边诚。
第二季将由3集组成，分别改编自原著系列中的《Not Dead Enough》《Dead Man’s Footsteps》《Dead Tomorrow》。
