故事发生在1939至1942年间的陕北绥德三十里铺。当时日军已侵占山西，保卫黄河之战如火如荼。绥德县属国共两党的共管区，国共两党成员、日军特务、土匪，以及赶牲灵的驼队、骡队和脚户挑夫等经常往来歇息于三十里铺的骡马店。在动荡不安纷繁复杂的环境中，四妹子和三哥哥为了爱情、生存、革命都做出了巨大的努力，留下绝唱《三十里铺》。
故事讲述一辆运镖车在押送途中，被一个身穿红棉袄，脚穿绣花鞋蒙面大盗劫走。好事的陆小凤和花满楼，助京中“第一捕快”调查此案。导演楚原将古龙武侠世界的复杂多变，处理得简明而吸引，绣花针、绣花鞋、红棉袄，映像诡异，本片集推理、武侠、香艳于一炉。“绣花大盗”的形象深入民心，间接影射了徐克拍“东方不败”时，用的红线、飞针武功。

《山茶花开时》讲述的是一个孤儿冬柏长大后成为单身母亲的故事。她开了一家居酒屋，名为“冬柏”，中文意思是山茶花。龙植是镇上一名正义满满的巡警，在遇到他之后，冬柏的生活发生了转折。他们不顾世俗对单亲妈妈的偏见而坠入爱河。龙植从小由妈妈独自抚养长大，明白冬柏这一路走来有多么艰辛，所以想要用一生去守护她。

同时，随着永澄和灿的婚期的推进，越来越多的人鱼聚集到了永澄的身边。双重人格的江户前留奈（野川樱 配音），一心想要至永澄于死地的卷（桑谷夏子 配音），精明强干的剑士不知火明乃（喜多村英梨 配音），这些可爱的人鱼们除了给永澄的生活增添了不少麻烦外，也带来了很多的快乐。
