女優の中谷美紀が、“ジェンダー”を題材にした東野圭吾氏の小説をドラマ化する「連続ドラマW 東野圭吾 『片想い』」に主演することがわかった。WOWOWの「連続ドラマW」枠への出演は初となり、性同一性障害の女性・日浦美月という難役に挑戦している。
2017年夏、大学時代ともに汗を流したアメリカンフットボール部の仲間たちが同窓会を開催。その帰り道、エースQB（クォーターバック）の西脇哲朗ら部員の前に現れた元女子マネージャー・美月が「オレは、人を殺した」「今、オレは・・・男として生きている」と衝撃の告白をする。美月の言葉に困惑する哲朗たちだったが、輝いていた青春時代、そして仲間を守るために事件の真相を追い求めていく。
「初めて東野圭吾さんの作品を演じさせていただくことになりましたが、諸手を挙げてというよりは、むしろ大変な役目を背負ってしまい、狼狽しております」と胸中を吐露する中谷。「演じる側としては、大変ハードルの高い作品」と説明しながらも、役作りのために筋力トレーニングを実施し、さらに髪の毛を15センチもカットするという気合の入りようだ。「まずは、男らしさを追及しつつも、美月の台詞にもある『どんなにあがいても本物にはなれない』という悲哀を表現できたらと思います」と告白している。
WOWOWが東野作品を映像化するのは、「宿命」「幻夜」「分身」「変身」「カッコウの卵は誰のもの」に続き、今回で6度目。東野氏は「片想い」のドラマ化について「ついにこの小説に挑む人たちが現れたか、と驚きました。未だに社会が答えを見つけられていない問題。しっかりと光を当ててくださることを願います」と期待を寄せている。また「この役を引き受けてくださったというだけで、役者としての魂の強さを感じます」と中谷の出演を喜び「自由に、大胆に演じてくだされば、それが美月だと思います」とコメントを寄せている。
