据导演何群透露，《新青年》将区别于传统主旋律史诗剧的严肃刻板，适当加入轻喜剧的叙事成分，呈现一种幽默的风格。何群曾表示，该剧涉及辛亥革命、二次革命、新文化运动、第一次世界大战、五四运动、中国共产党成立、南昌起义等历史事件，但采取的不是正面强攻的方式，而是聚焦大历史背景中的小人物命运。
本片共78集，分为三个系列。其中第一系列《喊茶之旅》（26集）主要讲述了乌龙小子为拯救云顶茶园，带领茶精灵与小伙伴前往各名茶产地寻找21粒神茶茶籽。该系列将于今年年底播出。第二系列《斗茶之旅》、第三系列《海丝之旅》也将陆续问世。
