影片讲述了报名参加西部志愿计划的彭光亮，带着为建设西部尽一份力的壮志，踏上了通往新疆塔什库尔干的旅程。他的本意是运用专业所学开发旅游业，却被老一代扶贫干部杨信达带到了世界屋脊——帕米尔高原上不通路、不通网、村子里的小孩子们去上学需耗时多天并翻越悬崖峭壁的皮乐村。这个小村偏僻且穷困，生活着中国唯一的白种人民族：塔吉克族，而他的工作任务是让这个落后小村成为高原绝境中的一颗熠熠明珠。面对荒凉而严酷的自然环境，彭光亮开始了一段绝不荒凉、甚至是波澜壮阔的人生。影片通过讲述彭光亮与杨信达这一少一老、一谐一正、有着不同人生观和价值观的两代扶贫干部在最基层的平凡岗位上为村人的行路、用水、下一代受教育等最切实的问题踏实操劳、扎根奉献的故事，展现了勤劳善良的塔吉克族人民对美好幸福生活的追求与向往，也展现了新一代扶贫人质朴却真诚、平凡中有坚守的奔腾人生。

故事以于凡（周润发）及江浩文（梁朝伟）两个生活不同环境的人物，带出现实社会的一个小片段。于凡从事电影替身及特技人，浩文则是一间顾问公司的小职员，两人的遇上，极不咬弦而成为难兄难弟。于凡极爱同居的女友杜旖玲，但旖玲不喜欢他这种无规律的工作，两人终于分手。而浩文因在公司内不得志，愤而辞职，后更与于凡同住。于凡与浩文无意中被牵涉入一宗毒品案中，但两人毫不知情，更被黑帮用荷兰杀手宋波（任达华）追杀。另一方面，浩文加入社区中心当社工，因工作关系，浩文结识了康嘉欣（陈秀珠），两人展开一段恋情。而杀手宋波一方面对嘉欣展开追求，一方面又要杀害于凡与浩文，故事发展曲折，出人意表。
该剧改编自长冈弘树的同名小说，以培养警察的警校为舞台，描述学生们挑战极限、获得成长的故事，工藤阿须加、川口春奈、林遣都、葵若菜、井之胁海、富田望生、味方良介、村井良大等饰演警校的学生，将接受严苛教官风间公亲(木村拓哉 饰)的指导。 剧集由君塚良一(《跳跃大搜查线》)编剧，中江功(《冰上恋人》)导演，将于2020年1月4日、5日连续两夜播出。
