该剧讲述了以解放军退伍女兵、共产党员黄少花曲折而奋斗的一生为主线，以黄少花和魏守根、田山堂的情感纠葛为叙事线索，以解放战争、抗美援朝、改革开放等历史时期为背景，反映中国农村的历史变迁和一群农民历经悲欢离合走向幸福新生活的故事。
