该剧故事发生的年代为明崇祯十七年、清顺元年(即公元1644年)，至南明永历十六年，清康熙元年(即公元1662年)。李自成进北京逼崇祯皇帝煤山自缢，吴三桂为报家伊引清兵入关，清军长驱直入，明王朝因此危亡。李自成称大顺皇帝，张献忠称大西帝,顺治在多尔衮孝庄进京后称帝,在这特殊时期里,谁主沉浮？剧情由此展开.
