1938年10月武汉弃守后，中国抗战进入相持阶段，“文夕大火”却把即将成为抗日前线的长沙付之一炬。铁血将军薛岳临危受命，赴任第九战区代司令长官；他曾经的对手——八路军驻湘通讯处彭中华，则奉中共中央之命，主动上门献计献策，与薛岳并肩尽抗敌守土之责。经历悲壮惨烈的恶战，薛岳终于在中国共产党和湖湘群众的密切配合与支持下，指挥三湘虎将先后逐退了冈村宁次、阿南惟畿对长沙的三次进攻。而像李本忠这样身不由己加入到抗战洪流中的小人物，亦在艰苦奋战的洗礼中逐渐成长为一位智勇双全的铁血战士。当第三次长沙会战结束，抗战还任重道远，但中国人民已经用铁的事实证明了毛泽东《论持久战》中的论断：“坚持抗战，坚持统一战线，最后的胜利必然属于中国！”
