本剧是根据同名小说《战火中的青春》改编的。
1960年，年轻技术员常汉卿刚留学回来，与从铁道兵部队转业分配到厂里来的女战斗英雄金灿烂相遇了。他们从互相看不顺眼到相知、相爱，克服了来自家庭和外界的干扰，最终结合在了一起。婚后他们一起克服来自生活的种种困难、研究技术，花费了毕生精力共同为我国电力机车的研发、建造作出努力。岁月变迁后，他们的孩子也最终选择了机车建造这一专业，并为我国建造出了世界一流的高铁。

该剧是根据久住昌之创作、谷口二郎作画的同名漫画改编而成，原作目前正在《周刊SPA！》（扶桑社）进行不定期连载当中，讲述的是一名个人经营输入杂货商店的男子井之头五郎，在工作间隙前往餐馆当中吃饭的场景的故事。作品中登场的餐馆全部都是实际存在的，其中一个重要的特点就在于基本上都是一些大众化的餐馆，只不过作品中并不是单纯地描述食文化，而是着重表现主人公吃饭的场景以及心理描写。
