《挣扎》讲述了上世纪八十年代顾灵娇跟祁万山自由恋爱，结为夫妻。婚后当顾灵娇连续产下两个女儿之后，婆媳关系和夫妻关系开始恶化。并最终导致夫妻关系破裂。作为建筑公司职工的祁万山，从此不再照顾这个家庭。婆婆穆芳也排斥顾灵娇母子三人。顾灵娇的生活陷入困境。但是顾灵娇依然勇敢的担当起抚养女儿的责任，艰苦劳动，维持这个家庭。
