1928年的中国，数十万人因“共党”、“通共”的罪名被屠杀。美国青年埃德加.斯诺旅行来到中国。为了生活，斯诺当了一名记者，被授意为当权者撰写歌功颂德的文章。但斯诺不肯违背良知，他对中国现实的如实报道为他赢得了一些革命者和进步人士的友谊，也使他成为当权者的眼中钉，并因此历尽磨难。在和革命者的接触中，斯诺被他们的精神所感染，产生了采访红军的念头。终于在宋庆龄等人的帮助下，斯诺成为第一位到达苏区、采访革命领袖毛泽东的西方记者，并撰写了著名的《红星照耀中国》。1941年，由于揭露蒋介石在皖南事变中的倒行逆施，斯诺被驱逐返回美国。60年代，斯诺因麦卡锡主义被迫移居瑞士。1971年，斯诺作为中美两国之间的信使再次来到中国，受到毛泽东等国家领导人的接见。中美建交前夕，斯诺去世。
