《出关》视角新颖，讲述了一个与众不同的传奇事件：一群手无寸铁的被俘红军官兵和壮丁被一支声称要出关抗日的川北地方军阀部队荷枪实弹地押往潼关，于是，从“出关”启程那天开始，红军敌工科长刘一手与国军团长丁成义就展开了斗智斗勇的生死较量。脱逃、暗杀、卧底、钳制；提防、争斗、锄奸、融合，这段漫长历程对双方来说，都是危机四伏和异常艰险的。红军官兵恪守信仰，以精神和智慧突围，与敌智斗，攻破敌心，最终靠精神和意志战胜、影响和改变了押解自己的敌人，与之携手，摒弃前嫌，共赴国难，出关抗日。
剧以身在南洋艰苦奋斗的热血儿女在革命精神的指引下，积极为了国内的革命事业出钱出力，最终在革命党人朱瑾(隋俊波 饰)的正确指引下全都积极投身革命事业，为新中国最终的伟大胜利做出了不可磨灭的贡献为内容核心，以黄圣依、佟大为饰演青梅竹马的恋人陶舒燕与简肇庆的凄美的爱情故事为主线。 剧中简肇庆从懵懂的少年，到与青梅竹马的恋人陶舒燕生离死别下南洋，而后陶舒燕为爱赴南洋寻简肇庆，正当二人久别重逢喜极而泣之际，却爆出两家祖上的恩怨世仇又使有情人却成劳燕分飞，后经两人情真意笃相思相守的冲破封建牢笼又有情人终成眷属，最终却因误会而演绎了一场罗密欧与朱丽叶的悲剧恋情。
