《三哭殿》这部影片的摄制宗旨是尊重传统、传承传统，在尽可能保留原汁原味的前提下发展创新。因此，该剧版本虽多，但电影剧本以当年唐喜成先生演出本为基础，仅作了些电影时空的处理与调整。在唱腔方面，尽可能小改小动。为了保证这一意图的体现，我们特请当年该剧舞台导演、秦英的扮演者谢巧官出山担任副导演。与此同时，又将影片全部场景放在横店影视城的实景拍摄，在戏曲与电影两种不同的艺术形式之间，以戏曲为本，避实就虚、虚实结合，通过真实的皇宫庭院，丰富了影片的造型元素，给人以赏心悦目之感。
