该剧以1937年“七七事变”后日本大举侵略中国、国民政府由南京迁都重庆为背景，讲述了川军英勇抗敌以及重庆人民在八年抗战中无比顽强的生存之路。剧中张丰毅出演川军将领朱豪，一个袍哥出身的草莽军人，同时又是一个逐渐苏醒的爱国青年，还与抢来的大学生媳妇上演了一段“不般配”恋情。
