影片讲述的是淮海战役在即，村民们筹备的物资粮食已整装待发，女民兵队长朱永兰劝说村中木匠鲍亮加入支前队伍，鲍亮心中记挂着即将成婚的妻子拒绝加入。然而，他的未婚妻却加入战地医院随队伍开拔。于是，鲍亮自愿加入了支前大军，一边寻找未婚妻，一边支援前线作战。 刚加入队伍的鲍亮，很不适应艰苦的条件和环境，还遭到国民党逃军的挟持。运输队长鲍平安怕他给队伍拖后腿，动员他回家，但鲍亮坚持了下来。经历艰难困苦考验，鲍亮完全融入了革命队伍，并与战友们建立了深厚的感情，为革命做出了很大贡献。
